Elementary
education encompasses pre-school education, primary
school education and middle school education (junior
middle and senior middle). Child education features
infant education in the urban areas, and pre-school
education in the rural areas. Lengths of schooling are:
five or six years for primary schools, three (mostly)
or four years for junior middle schools, and three years
for senior middle schools. A nine-year compulsory education is provided in China, covering education at primary school and junior middle school levels. Graduates from primary schools involved in the nine-year compulsory education may go to middle schools directly for three-year study. Graduates of
junior middle schools cannot go on to senior middle
schools unless they pass entrance examinations organized
by local education authorities.
